Unique Local Insights

Community Information:

Creek Valley Schools is a consolidated district located in the western panhandle of Nebraska.  At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year, the villages of Chappell and Lodgepole, situated ten miles apart on Interstate 80, consolidated to form one combined district.  Chappell is home to nearly 1000 residents, many of which are employed in local businesses or as farmers and ranchers.  Lodgepole has a population of approximately 380 residents.  Several members of both communities are employed at the large Cabela’s corporation in nearby Sidney, with positions including corporate office, warehouse, and retail.
The community primarily consists of people of White, non Hispanic ethnicity.  Mobility rates are slightly lower than state average.  The average household income for Chappell is $38, 277 and $27,386 for Lodgepole households.  26.5% of the adult residents in Chappell and 6.2% of Lodgepole residents have acquired post-secondary education.
Chappell and Lodgepole both reached their highest populations at the 1920’s during the locomotive boom.  While both communities are not currently at their highest populations, they continue to remain vibrant.

District Information and Organization:

Creek Valley Middle Schools was formed as a consolidation of Chappell Public Schools and Lodgepole Public Schools in the fall of 2004.  Due to decreasing student populations and a desire to remain progressive as a school district, the two districts merged.  In the current 2006-2007 school year, Creek Valley Schools serves approximately 275 students in K-12 education.
The Creek Valley High School serves 9th through 12th grades and approximately 106 students.  Located in Chappell, NE, the building was built in 19__.  Although somewhat limited in course offerings due to a smaller staff, Creek Valley High provides a strong program for both college-bound and non-college bound students.  Silent and sustained reading time was implemented during the previous school improvement cycle as an intervention strategy to improve reading comprehension.  The math department has a strong Algorithmic focus for instruction, while the English department utilizes a literature-based approach combined with the 6-Traits Writing Model.
The Creek Valley Middle School serves 5th through 8th grades and approximately 85 students.  Located in Lodgepole, NE, the building was built in 1959 as a traditional high school structure.  During the consolidation, the middle school was transformed to best accommodate the middle levels.  Fifth grade students are housed in a traditional self-contained classroom for the majority of their day, transitioning only for “Specials” classes and one core class.  Sixth through Eighth grade students transition throughout the day, but the small school of ten staff members maintains a middle school philosophy.  The middle school currently participates in the Reading Counts program in addition to individual fifth and sixth grade reading core classes.  The 6-Traits Writing Model is emphasized, and a mixture of Constructivist and Algorithmic math approaches are incorporated into the curriculum.

Creek Valley Elementary School serves Kindergarten through 4th grades and approximately 85 students.  Located in the original Chappell Elementary building, five self-contained classrooms serve this population of students.  Students participate in Physical Education and Music classes as components of their rotational experiences.  Library times have been established as a means of encouraging the self-selection of level-appropriate books.  The Accelerated Reader program was implemented as an instructional tool in the previous school improvement cycle as a strategy to improve student’s reading comprehension and fluency.  The 6-Traits Writing Model is emphasized, particularly beginning in the second grade.  A Constructivist approach to mathematics is emphasized in the elementary grades, and the Saxon Math Model was introduced in 2005.
