Creek Valley Schools

District Goal Selection Process
  • October 6, 2006:  The Creek Valley School Improvement Steering Committee led a district-wide staff meeting with the goal of selecting a school improvement goal.
  • Steering committee members presented a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation displaying the following data:

    • Norm-referenced test results (Terra Nova)
    • Criterion-references test results (Nebraska S.T.A.R.S.)
    • Perceptual data (Parent, student, and teacher survey results)
  • During the presentation, the teaching staff was required to complete a handout listing strengths and potential areas of growth as a district.  Following the conclusion of the Powerpoint, the staff discussed these results in small table groups.
  • Table groups were required to use the information discussed to arrive at a potential school improvement goals.
  • Two potential goals emerged from this discussion:  Reading and Writing (with a focus on Conventions)
  • Each potential goal was then placed in a ActiveVote quiz, requiring teachers to respond anonymously to the following questions:
    • Is this an academic goal?
    • Can this goal be measured in a variety of ways?
    • Is this a priority for student learning?
    • Can you commit to this goal?

  • Once all results were tabulated, the staff used the results to make a final decision.  When presented the question, “Would a goal of improving student reading or improving student writing be best for our district?” 81% voted for the goal of “improving student reading.”
