The kindergarten social studies program enables students to explore a variety of individual and community celebrations. Students will gain knowledge of similarities and differences in the traditions of families and cultures found in the United States and other countries. Students will gain an understanding of how people communicate and work together in society. Students will develop an awareness of their close surroundings including their neighborhoods and communities. First Grade Social Studies emphasizes studies dealing with learning about our world and surroundings. Students gain knowledge through studies on going to school, good citizenship, the land around us, all about people, looking back, and jobs people do. Holiday activities explore a variety of individual and community celebrations. They bring about discussions of the similarities and differences of the traditions and cultures found in the United States. Map skills are introduced through class and individual activities. All of the units within the social studies curriculum aid in the growth and knowledge of the world and our surroundings. Second grade social studies emphasizes living in a community. Students learn about our government, our earth, family heritage, cultures, people and events of the past and present, producers, and consumers. Holiday activities explore a variety of individual and community celebrations. They prompt discussion of the similarities and differences of the traditions and cultures found in the United States. Christmas customs around the world are also compared and contrasted. The atlas and map skills are introduced. Citizenship is an important part of being a member of the community. Voting, making and following laws, and the role of our leaders (mayor, governor, president) are investigated. New vocabulary words help to broaden the understanding of our world and community.
Students will gain a comprehensive knowledge of communities by exploring the interaction and responsibilities of people. This will include the demographic and physical make up a variety of communities. They will explore their roles as citizens and gain knowledge of the local, state, and national government. They will develop an understanding of many kinds of people from their own American culture as well as from cultures around the world. Students will gain a better understanding of the present by learning about the past and will explore the aspects of producers and consumers by gaining knowledge of the work people do in their communities. A study of Social Studies will include the five strands: geography, history, economics, civics and government, and culture and society. The students will learn why each strand matters and how it applies to the study of the United States. Students will also study the five themes of geography: location, place, human-environment interactions, movement, and regions. They will discover how geographers understand the Earth by studying the six elements of geography: the world in spatial terms, places and regions, physical systems, human systems, environment and society, and the use of geography.
