Vern Mont Wiest was born Feb. 14, 1894, at Junction City, Kan., where his folks had taken a Homestead Claim in the early 1880’s. During World War I, Vern served in the A.E.F. with the 89th Division as machine gunner in the battles at St. Michel and the Argonne. He remained overseas after the Armistice when the 89th was kept behind as the Army of Occupation and taught school at Colblenz, Germany, as part of his duties. He attended the University of Neb. where he received his BA degree in 1920 and later Columbia Universitywhere he received his Master’s degree in 1929. Vern was an outstanding eductor interested in young people and their problems. He was one of those responsible for the establishment of the backlog fund which made possible the building of the grade school addition in 1954. The building was named in his honor.
Supt. Vern M. Wiest. We deeply appreciate his fine work, as his every interest was in promoting high standards which our schools are noted for.
Our trophy cases are filled with honors from each years classes — from every department: football, basketball, track, tennis, band, dramatics, vocal and glee club music and scholastic attainments. Wish I could give each participant personal thanks for your fine performance, for the joy and entertainment you have given to this community and school. Each student has been important and necessary to the success and development of our school including my own Sons who could not be here tonight. So to all a big thank you, especially Supt. V.M. Wiest, for your Sixteen years of leadership
