Harland Rex Sutton was born in Chappell, Neb., Sept. 14, 1924, to Jesse Rex and Vera Mae Sutton. The first ten years of his life, he lived on three different farms nor­thwest of Chappell and attended the Mt. Vernon country school. In 1934, when he was in the fourth grade, he, with his parents, moved to 1081 1st St. in Chappell. He and his parents also lived at 1266 1st St. and 1202 3rd St. He attended the Chappell Grade School and graduated from the Deuel County High School in 1942. He attended one semester at the University of Neb. then returned home to help his dad build grain elevators.

On March 4, 1945, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Louise Thornburg.

After serving in the Armed Forces, he returned to work with his father in the manufacturing of truck bodies and grain elevators.

Harland enjoyed sports and officiated both football and basketball for twenty-seven years. He refereed several years at the Neb. State Basketball Tournaments.

Harland was engaged in farming north of Chappell. He was also a member of the City Council, an A.S.C.S. County Committeeman, a member of the United Methodist Church, a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge and a Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star.
